UMak Honors Jean Henri Lhuillier with Highest Distinction for Enduring Legacy and Advocacy in Education

In recognition of his long-standing contributions to education and social development, the University of Makati (UMak) recently presented a Commemorative Medallion to Jean Henri Lhuillier, President and CEO of Cebuana Lhuillier, the Philippines’ largest and leading micro-financial center.

This distinction, which serves as UMak’s highest institutional honor and was previously worn by the university’s 5th President Elyxzur C. Ramos during his 2024 investiture, celebrates a partnership built on legacy and a shared commitment to nation-building by expanding access to learning and real-world opportunities.

“Education has always been one of the most powerful tools for long-term change. At Cebuana Lhuillier, we believe that when we open doors to learning and financial empowerment, we don’t just equip individuals with knowledge and skills — we help build stronger families, more resilient communities, and a more inclusive future for all,” Lhuillier said, reflecting the philosophy that continues to drive Cebuana Lhuillier’s deep involvement in education-focused advocacies.

In 2024, UMak also conferred upon Lhuillier the esteemed degree of Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa. This honorary degree is awarded to individuals whose achievements and contributions to society align strongly with the university’s vision, mission, and values. The conferment acknowledged Lhuillier’s leadership in advancing financial inclusion, grounded in efforts that create lasting impact across sectors.

An Enduring Partnership Anchored on a Common Purpose

The collaboration between the UMak and Cebuana Lhuillier is carried out through the Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation, Inc. (CLFI), the company’s corporate social responsibility arm. Guided by a series of Memorandums of Agreement, this partnership brings to life a variety of actionable initiatives that aim to support students in their academic and personal development, while fostering broader community empowerment.

Among these are scholarship programs that help students pursue higher education, and university-wide student accident insurance that provides added security throughout their academic journey. Financial education also plays a key role, with the #LahatKasama National Caravan enabling students to build practical money management skills and financial confidence.

Further supporting innovation and entrepreneurship, the Inter-School IT Olympics was launched to foster creativity and technical proficiency, while the MSME Coaching Program equips aspiring entrepreneurs with practical tools and hands-on guidance. The introduction of Project Management and Financial Literacy Modules, delivered through an enhanced digital learning platform, underscores both institutions’ commitment to preparing students for success beyond the classroom.

Together, CLFI and UMak continue to pursue shared goals and a clear roadmap for creating pathways that help transform lives.

More Than a Medallion: A Testament to Purposeful Collaboration

The Commemorative Medallion awarded to Jean Henri Lhuillier stands as a powerful symbol of what can be accomplished through collaboration that is both strategic and sincere. It is a reflection of the impact that emerges when institutions align around a common vision—one where education, financial empowerment, and social progress are not just ideals, but tangible outcomes.

“This recognition strengthens our resolve to continue building programs that empower Filipinos, especially the youth, to rise above challenges and shape their own futures,” Lhuillier said. “Together with UMak, we will keep pushing boundaries and creating platforms for growth, learning, and opportunity.”
