Breaking Barriers in Healthcare: The Medical City Unveils Bengzon Patient Access Ward for Affordable, World-Class Care

By Shaine Pe

Together with President and CEO Dr. Edwin M. Mercado, the new Alfredo R.A. Bengzon Patient Access Ward at The Medical City was officially opened. This ward has a 51-bed capacity designed to provide quality healthcare for Filipinos. It also features nine mother-and-child-friendly accommodations for new mothers and their babies, as well as two isolation rooms. Naming this modern ward after former DOH Secretary Alfredo R. A. Bengzon is a tribute to his lifelong dedication to improving healthcare for every Filipino. He was instrumental in advancing the Generics Act of 1988, which helped lower medicine costs and made affordable treatment more accessible nationwide. With the support of PhilHealth, world-class medical care at The Medical City is now more accessible without heavy financial burden—allowing more Filipinos to benefit from quality healthcare.
