DOST-PCAARRD Showcases Biotechnology Innovations to Advance Philippine Agriculture

LOS BAÑOS, LAGUNA — The Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) showcased promising biotechnology innovations during National Biotechnology Week (NBW) 2026. The showcase highlighted the vital role of science and technology in advancing Philippine agriculture and food security.

National Biotechnology Week Forum and Exhibit

DOST-PCAARRD organized a forum and exhibit in collaboration with the Institute of Crop Science (ICropS) of the College of Agriculture and Food Science (CAFS), University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB). The event featured selected technologies from various DOST- and DOST-PCAARRD-funded research and development programs.

The forum presented the accomplishments of four biotechnology projects focused on swine, coconut, agarwood, and cacao. UPLB, the Philippine Coconut Authority–Albay Research Center (PCA-ARC), and De La Salle University (DLSU) implemented these initiatives.

Innovations on Exhibit

The accompanying exhibit featured a diverse range of research initiatives and technology applications. These included the following:

  • Project LAYAG (Linang At Yaman ng kaalaman sa AGbioteknolohiya)
  • RNA Interference (RNAi) biopesticide for sweetpotato weevil management
  • Trichoderma microbial inoculant for rice straw management
  • Agarwood-forming pathogens in Aquilaria species
  • Microbial and plant-microbial combinations for bioremediation
  • Philippine natural zeolite-based particle film technology for cacao pest management
  • Mussel bioactive powder and lipid

These innovations demonstrate the potential of biotechnology to address agricultural challenges. They improve pest management, support environmental sustainability, and help develop value-added products from the country’s agricultural and natural resources.

Science-Based Solutions for Agriculture

Through its participation in NBW 2026, DOST-PCAARRD reaffirmed its commitment to advancing biotechnology research. It also seeks to strengthen research partnerships and promote science-based solutions for the agriculture, aquatic, and natural resources (AANR) sector.

The initiative underscored the importance of translating scientific discoveries into practical technologies. As a result, Filipino farmers, industries, and communities can benefit while national development moves forward.
