Cagwait Fisherfolk Receive ₱11.5-M Fishing Vessel from DA-BFAR

CAGWAIT, Surigao del Sur — Local fisherfolk received a ₱11.5-million handline fishing vessel from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) under the Department of Agriculture, boosting livelihood opportunities in the coastal town. The 62-foot fiber-reinforced plastic vessel was formally turned over to the Cagwait Fish Broker Association on April 16 as part of the government’s program to strengthen municipal fisheries. BFAR officials emphasized responsible use and proper maintenance of the vessel, urging beneficiaries to ensure safety during extreme weather and maximize its use for both livelihood and disaster response. Local officials welcomed the project, citing its potential to increase fish production, stabilize supply, and support food security, while fisherfolk pledged to manage the vessel responsibly and avoid illegal fishing. The initiative forms part of BFAR’s broader efforts to enhance fishing capacity and improve the welfare of coastal communities nationwide.
