King Charles Makes History: First British Monarch in 500 Years to Pray with a Pope

BAKU – King Charles III will make history as the first British monarch in five centuries to pray with a Pope, a moment of unity not seen since the Reformation in the 16th century, according to BBC reports.

A Historic Service at the Vatican

The King and Pope Leo will pray together in the Sistine Chapel during the royal couple’s state visit on October 22–23.
The event will take place under Michelangelo’s world-famous ceiling, bringing together choirs and clergy from both the Roman Catholic Church and the Church of England, where King Charles serves as Supreme Governor.

This shared service highlights a powerful message of reconciliation between two Christian traditions divided for centuries.

First Meeting with the New US-Born Pope

The visit also marks the first meeting between King Charles and Pope Leo, who recently succeeded the late Pope Francis.
The trip was initially postponed due to Pope Francis’ declining health before his passing earlier this year.

King Charles and Queen Camilla last met Pope Francis in April, during a private audience on their 20th wedding anniversary—one of the late pontiff’s final official meetings.

Strengthening Ties Between Churches

During their stay, the King and Queen will meet senior Vatican officials and attend several joint events.
A special ecumenical service will unite Catholic and Anglican traditions, featuring a moment of shared prayer between the monarch and the pontiff.

This gathering will be the first of its kind since Henry VIII’s split from Rome over 500 years ago.

A Step Toward Faith and Unity

Buckingham Palace and the Church of England have described the event as a milestone in Christian unity.
Royal aides emphasized that the service reflects the King’s lifelong mission to build bridges among faiths.

For decades, King Charles has promoted interfaith dialogue and respect among different religions.
This visit continues that mission, showing his dedication to peace, understanding, and cooperation.
