ORION, BATAAN — April 1, 2026 — Patriotism and a deep appreciation for Filipino literature took center stage as leaders in language, culture, and local governance gathered at the historic Hardin ni Balagtas to commemorate the birth anniversary of renowned poet Francisco “Balagtas” Baltazar. The event brought together key figures, including Marites A. Barrios-Taran, Chairperson of the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino, who delivered a compelling message on the enduring relevance of literature in today’s fast-changing world. “In an era marked by rapid technological and information shifts, literature serves as our anchor. Balagtas did not merely write verses—he laid the foundation of reason and love of country that remains timeless,” she emphasized. Barrios-Taran further highlighted literature as a collective voice and a vital tool for expressing sentiments and raising awareness on pressing social and cultural issues facing the nation today.
The commemoration commenced at 8:00 a.m. with the “Lakad-Balagtas,” followed by a ceremonial wreath-laying at the poet’s monument. Beyond its ceremonial nature, the event also served as a platform for intellectual discourse. Gary C. Devilles of Ateneo de Manila University delivered a lecture titled “Catharsis and the Ethics of Compassion in Florante at Laura.” A heartfelt poetry reading was also presented by Jose V. Baltazar III, a descendant of Balagtas. Local officials likewise expressed their support for preserving the poet’s legacy, including Orion Mayor Antonio L. Raymundo Jr. and Bataan Governor Jose Enrique “Joet” S. Garcia III. The program concluded with closing remarks from Commissioner Carmelita C. Abdurahman, reaffirming the collective commitment to uphold and promote the rich heritage of Filipino literature.
