Japan is taking a major step toward the Japan nuclear plant restart of the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant, the largest nuclear facility in the world. A recent Nikkei Asia report revealed that Niigata Governor Hideyo Hanazumi is set to approve the restart as early as Friday, marking a significant milestone in the country’s long and cautious journey back to nuclear power.
Why the Japan Nuclear Plant Restart Matters
The Kashiwazaki-Kariwa facility has been offline since 2012, following the Fukushima disaster that reshaped Japan’s national energy policy. With an enormous 8.2-gigawatt capacity and seven reactors, it remains one of the most powerful electricity providers globally.
Restarting this nuclear plant signals Japan’s intent to stabilize its energy supply, reduce dependence on fuel imports, and support its long-term decarbonization goals.
Governor Backs the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Restart
Governor Hanazumi has reportedly told prefectural staff that he will endorse the plan, with an official announcement expected soon. Afterward, the proposal will move to the Niigata Prefectural Assembly, which meets again on December 2.
If the assembly approves, the prefecture will inform the national government that all local requirements for the Japan nuclear plant restart have been fulfilled.
Safety Review and Reactor Readiness
Safety concerns remain central to any nuclear-related decision in Japan. A February technical review concluded that the plant meets strict post-Fukushima safety standards.
Only Reactor Unit 6 is fully prepared for activation, with nuclear fuel already loaded. If all final reviews proceed without delay, the reactor could begin operations by March next year.
