MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Navy marked 128 years of dedicated maritime service, highlighting its continued commitment to safeguarding the country’s seas and ensuring the safety and security of the Filipino people. For more than a century, generations of Filipino sailors have maintained a constant presence at sea, protecting national waters, securing vital sea lanes, and supporting communities that depend on marine resources for their livelihood. As part of ongoing efforts to modernize and strengthen naval capabilities, the Navy formally commissioned the BRP Rajah Lakandula, a new offshore patrol vessel designed to enhance maritime defense operations and expand the country’s reach in protecting its territorial waters.

The addition of the new vessel is expected to bolster critical missions including maritime patrol, protection of the country’s exclusive economic zone, support for fisherfolk, and rapid response during disasters, search-and-rescue operations, and humanitarian assistance missions at sea.Defense officials emphasized that strengthening naval assets is a key component of ensuring national security, particularly as the country continues to face evolving maritime challenges. The Philippine Navy also paid tribute to its personnel deployed across various waters, recognizing their sacrifices, discipline, and unwavering dedication to service, often spent far from their families and homes.Officials underscored that the Navy’s legacy is built not only on ships and missions, but also on the courage and patriotism of its sailors who continue to serve with honor.
