DOST-PCAARRD, IFSU Advance Muscovy Duck R&D to Boost Food Security and Livelihoods

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development, in partnership with Ifugao State University, is advancing a collaborative research and development (R&D) initiative aimed at strengthening the production of Muscovy ducks in the Philippines. Commonly raised for meat, Muscovy ducks are recognized as a versatile and resilient poultry species that can serve as an additional food source and livelihood opportunity for Filipino farmers, particularly during periods of inclement weather. The project focuses on establishing a sustainable, true-to-type breeding population of Muscovy ducks with predictable growth performance and consistent product quality. By improving breeding systems and production standards, the initiative seeks to enhance the reliability and profitability of duck farming for local communities. Officials highlighted that the program supports the country’s broader goals of food security and agricultural resilience, especially in the face of climate-related challenges. Through science-based innovations and institutional collaboration, the project aims to provide farmers with improved livestock resources that can withstand environmental uncertainties.
